The labors of Basil, the two Gregories, and Macrina sought to integrate the faith with reason in such a way that reason was the servant of the Word, and to create a cosmology that achieved in a Christian and revolutionary way what Julian sought to achieve in a reactionary manner. Gregory of Nyssa especially sought to give the Church a “lexicon of transcendence” that integrated the faith of the Nicene Creed with reason and its best hellenistic expressions. His became a cosmology as well as an ethic that was based on the biblical doctrine of creation.

The Carolingian Renaissance beginning in the middle of the eighth century syncretized a military idealism with a religious one, destined to become the age of chivalry. Charlemagne would develop the theocratic ideal beyond the Byzantine style and along Teutonic lines, but there would be a far more intensified struggle between Church and State ensuing from this by the end of the first millennium. Out of all this amalgam was growing the twofold syncretistic thrust that we shall study further: the many ordering tendencies of monastic intellectual and cultural preservation as well as the vagaries of popular religiosity.

He sought “real scientific knowledge”—a knowledge not of words and subtle distinctions, but of “things” (Gilson, 1957, 279). In a sense, Albert may be called a predecessor of the kind of phenomenological methodology that is so necessary as a stage in the process of understanding another culture and faith. ” Bacon did not intend to create an exposition of Christian wisdom, but simply to urge the pursuit of research, and especially of experimentation. This search for “concrete” evidence led Gilson to say of him that his very errors often show a mind ahead of its time.
