My analyses of these authors do not rely on the unifying trope of the semiautobiographical I-novel; on the contrary, I particularly avoid interpreting their works from this perspective. It is true that these authors often use what Tomi Suzuki calls the “literary and ideological paradigm” of the I-novel; that is, although not necessarily categorized as I-novels in the narrow or formal sense of the term, many of these works are part of a literary mode in which texts are considered a reflection of authorial reality.
